damping

[Archived phorum post from squ1.com v2 by clarice]

Hi everybody,

Can anyone give me a hand with vocabulary, again ?
I couldn't find a definition for damping , high damping - words commonly mentioned in the acoustic design section.
I suppose it is some kind of acoustic barrier. Am I correct?

nothing wrong with a bit of a language lesson Clarice Smiling

I'm just guessing that those translated words (Portuguese & Spanish) are ok, as I could not find a translation for them to English...

So just to clarify incase it is needed (perhaps for others); acoustic damping is just a term used to indicate a need or method for reducing noise or reflections etc. It can be as a result of an impact noise, in which case it might be a material that softens the contact between surfaces causing the noise; or it could simply be a type of absorber to help reduce airborne noises.

Hope this helps...

Caroline

Hi Caroline,

Thank you for the clarified explanation. That's exactly what "amortecimento" (in Portuguese), "amortiguamiento" (in Spanish) mean.

Clarice
