weather file for Rio de Janeiro

[Archived phorum post from squ1.com v2 by Alexandra]

Hi,
I need to create a weather file for Rio de Janeiro, and have no idea where/how to start. What is the structure of a wea weather file? If I decide to create it in Excel, what info should it contain? I have been searching lots, and am totally confused!

Alexandra,

Don't panic!
First, you should have a look at this F.A.Q. , to get an idea of what a weather file is about.

Next, i could find a weather file for Sao Paulo - not Rio, but might be close enough?
If you go to the EnergyPlus Website , you'll find a list for weather data for various cities in the world.
Find Sao Paulo in Brazil, then download the zip file (red square).
You should have a EPW file that you are able to open with the weather tool.
Actually, i have already converted it in a WeatherTool file, so i am emailing it to you right now Smiling.

I wish you could fing exactly Rio for your study. Perhaps Clarice, a regular phorum contributor from Brazil might be able to help you best if she read this post.

Hope it helps meanwhile.

Best,

olivier

Hi Alexandra,

You can find a weather file for Rio de Janeiro in the website www.labeee.ufsc.br, they have weather files for all Brasilian capitals and it's freeware. The only trouble is that these files do not have solar radiation data but you can simulate them using a software developed at the website: www.solar.ufrgs.br, it is also freeware. Then you export the radiation data to the weather file you got in labeee and you'll have a pretty good weather file for Rio. I did this with the Porto Alegre weather file and it's working fine.

Let me know if you need further help with brasilian weather files.

Best regards,

Clarice

Hi Clarice,
Thanks for your help
Ok, I got the weather file from Labee, and I got Radiasol. How do I export the radiation data from Radiasol to the labee weather file?
I have another problem: in trying to work with the weather tool, i have not been able to load the weather file i got from labee (rio.dat), which i saved in the weather data folder.
Do you work in a University in Brazil?

Hi Olivier,
Thanks for your help. I had already searched the Energyplus database for Rio...and it is so that even though Rio and SP are only 400km apart, our climates are totally different!
Clarice's input has helped, now I need to learn how to handle the info!
Best Rgds

Hi Alexandra,

You cannot export the Labeee data directly to the weather tool. You have to build up a spreadsheet in Excell where you'll add the radiation data, remove unnecessary info and then export everything to the WeaTool.
Pick up the data you've got from Labeee (do not use the .bin file use the other one) and export them to Excell building up a spreadsheet. Then open Radiasol select Rio as the city and generate solar radiation data for everyday of the year, now comes the boring part, you have to select the data from radiasol, copy them, open the spreadsheet and paste the Radiasol data on it - for everyday of the year (365 times)!!! There's no automatic way to do this. Use the keybord shortcuts not the mouse as apparently it is not working....
Let me know how things are going on for you, then we'll work on the weatool export.
I agree with you, it's not possible to use the S?o Paulo weather file instead of Rio, the climate conditions are completely different!
No, I do not work in the University, how about you?

Regards,

Clarice

Clarice,
Wow - I imported the '63 Try file for Rio into Excell, and a lot of it lost its format (if ever it had one...). I suppose now I will have to fix each cell one by one, according to the TRY file format? (trabalho de chines...)
I am doing research at Proarq, at UFRJ. DO you live in Brazil?

Hi Alexandra,

No, you do not have to do this manually (guarda o trabalho de chin?s pra depois...). Open the .try in a notepad or sth to save it as a .txt format. Then go to Excell and open it there. A window will pop up asking how to import the .txt format. Use the option "delimitado - caracteres como virgulas ou tabula??es separam cada campo"; Click "avan?ar - Delimitadores / Tabula??o" (The Excell version I have access to is in Portuguese) then end. You'll see that everything is going to be separated properly.
Then you'll have to work on each column assigning what are they refering to. I've sent a .doc file to your e-mail, that I got from Labeee, explaining what each column of the .try files correspond to so that you can do this.

Good work!

Regards,

Clarice

P.S. I'd be glad to know more about ProArq. I live in Porto Alegre - RS.

Sure Gisele,
i am sending you the file to your email.
I converted it from a .EPW file from the E+ website.
I hope it works well for you.

Hi Olivier

Thanks for the WEA file.
I would like to know where and how this file was created because I need to explain it in my dissertation.

Can you help me?

Sorry Kinsel,
I have no idea how it was created.
i just happened to have it on my machine.
I recall Clarice doing quite a bit of work on that; she may have used the RADIOSOL software to derive the solar insolation. Not sure at all.

Hi Olivier,
Thanks for your attention, but I have another question.
Is it possible in the ecotect software determine a specific period in the year in thermal simulations? Around 15 days...

Date-specific calculations

comment posted by Olivier :: 15 May 2007 - 4:55am

Lu,

You can have a script run any type of thermal calculation over any range of date.
Also, some of the thermal calculation routine give you that option from the interface itself.
Have you tried a demo version of Ecotect?
Let me know if you need more guidance with that.

Best,
Olivier

Hi Olivier!

Thanks again for your patience...
I am running an educational Ecotect package that the University has acquired.
The problem I am facing whith is: I do not know what is the command, in the menu options, which does the script running ...

Scripting

comment posted by Olivier :: 23 May 2007 - 6:14am

Lu,

Scripting is done via the scriptor tool.
You can open the scripting application by going to the Tool menu > scripting.

Then you can open any script for Ecotect to run.
Try the one I am attaching: it will calculate the Direct Solar Gains for the current zone of your model.

You can change the range of days at line 34.
To change the type of thermal calculation, change the column number at line 49 (3 for Direct Solar).

Best,
Olivier

Hi Olivier!

Thanks again for your patience... I am investigating the script.
I have another question: I would like to know if the Ecotect considers the solar radiation in the thermal analysis or the incidence of solar radiation is used only for studies of solar geometry?

I did this question because I made two models in the Ecotect, and includes brise (system of brise-soleil) in the window, and the internal temperatures remain practically the same one without the use of brise.

Solar Radiation in Thermal

Hi Lu,

Yes, Ecotect accounts for the solar radiations while calculating thermal analysis.
Send me your model so I can have a quick look.

Solar gains

Hi Oliver!
The model in the attached file don´t alter the internal temperatures (ºC) and the solar gains (Wh) when I try include the brises (system of brise-soleil) in the windows!
Thank you for attention.

Lu,

Something is wrong with your window. I could not figure out what it was, but you can see it isn't letting any light in in the 3D canvas.
Delete your window and simply create a new one.
Your brise soleil will then show some performance...

.WEA files

Hy Oliver.
I need a weather file to Sorocaba city, 131 km from São Paulo city, in Brasil. How or where can I get it... or how can I create it?

sorocaba.wea

comment posted by Kinsel :: 19 April 2008 - 7:31pm

Oi Regina!

-Você pode usar o programa METEONORM (o LabCon da UFRGS tem esse programa), para conseguir o arquivo climático da cidade de Sorocaba. Os dados de saída são diversos, e possui dados de clima de inúmeras cidades;

Lu Eye-wink
